Story Guide
Episode 1
Hope is five years old, and her world is a bread roll and a bottle of milk she has to ask for. When a vendor hands her an egg and then a drumstick, the mood sours fast — a customer accuses her of greed, and Hope quietly explains the truth: her mother, Lynn Foster, is sick in the hospital and too thin to fight. The vendor's anger turns to shame, and he packs food for her.
Then an old man falls in the street. Bystanders warn Hope not to get involved — if he blames her, her parents will have to pay. She runs to him anyway and begs him to wake up.

Episode 2
The old man Hope saved is Mr. Stark Sr, and he can't stop staring at her. She looks startlingly like someone he knows. Hope says her name is Hope, that her mother is ill in the hospital, and that she has no father.
When his household staff come looking, Mr. Stark Sr insists on taking her home for a meal first, promising to drive her to the hospital afterward. There, a woman of the house hands Hope money for saving him — a thousand, then two thousand, then three. Hope doesn't understand why saving someone costs money. The woman tells her to know when to stop.

Episode 3
Hope refuses the cash outright. If helping a fallen grandfather came with a price, she asks, what happens the next time he falls and she has no money? The woman is thrown — either the child is genuinely selfless, or she's after something far bigger than a few thousand.
Left alone, Hope meets a girl her own age who demands to know who she is and why she's in her house. The girl, Jiaojiao, has already decided Hope doesn't belong.
Episode 4
Jiaojiao declares the house is hers and orders Hope out — along with the sack of bottles Hope has been collecting. Hope refuses to leave; Mr. Stark Sr promised to take her to the hospital. Jiaojiao sneers that no one simply gets to live here.
Mr. Stark Sr steps in: Hope is his guest, the bottles are her hard-earned money, and no one is to bully her. He keeps his promise and takes her to the hospital. But at the door, Hope hesitates and asks him something unexpected.
Episode 5
Hope asks to live at the Stark house. Jiaojiao takes it as proof that Hope wanted more than money all along, and the woman of the house presses her too.
Hope's reason is simple: she heard that working here earns a wage, and she can sweep, wipe tables, and wash clothes. She doesn't need much — just enough for her mother's treatment. She even offers a trial day, unpaid. Mr. Stark Sr agrees, but says her real job starts when someone else comes home.
That someone is Eric Stark. And the job? Being his daughter — for fifty thousand a month.
Episode 6
Eric Stark is furious. Fifty thousand a month for a child? Mr. Stark Sr waves him off — it's his own money, and in his view the boy has been joyless since a breakup five years ago. A little girl in the house might thaw him.
Jiaojiao can't resist bragging that her birthday red envelope was bigger. Hope admits she doesn't know how to be anyone's daughter. Mr. Stark Sr pushes Eric to hold her. Lifted high, Hope marvels that being held by a father feels like this. Then she asks Eric directly.
Episode 7
Eric agrees. Mr. Stark Sr declares the arrangement official: Hope is his granddaughter and Eric's daughter, fifty thousand a month, not a cent less.
But Hope suddenly remembers the time — her mother will be waking, and today is chemotherapy. She describes it with painful precision: her mother vomits, feels cold, and grips her hand. Eric, on his first day as a father, drives her himself.
At home, Jiaojiao complains that Hope is stealing everyone. Her mother warns her not to bully a child that pitiful — but admits the coincidence bothers her.
Episode 8
Back at the hospital, Lynn Foster has already been wheeled in for chemotherapy. Hope is told to wait outside; she promises not to run off, insisting she only wants to sit beside her mother, hold the bag, warm her hands.
Turned away, Hope draws a picture of a smiling sun and gives it to her mother for later. Her mother taught her that a sun that smiles makes needles less frightening.
Episode 9
The doctor delivers the blow: Lynn's illness is worsening faster than expected, the treatment adjusted, and the family should prepare themselves. Hope translates it into her own logic — her mother just hasn't eaten enough. She arrives with eggs and the big drumstick she was once promised, begging her mother to wake and take one bite.
Her mother doesn't stir. So Hope sings the song her mother always used to comfort her — about fireflies and stars — and asks the stars to listen. Someone else recognizes that melody.
