I'm Not a Jinx, I'm a Hero

In a world where monsters hunt humans, the Mage King Kane drives back the vampire hordes, and one cursed night leaves him with a son he never knew about. Twelve years later, that boy, Caleb, is a village outcast branded a "Jinx." He grows up in a livestock pen with his devoted mother Annie, mocked as a worthless idiot. When Caleb shatters the Testing Stone with a nine-star talent that only the Mage King has ever matched, the Magic Academy takes him in as a mere auditor. There, snobbish nobles, scheming classmates and vampires lurking in the shadows all test him. He wins two loyal friends, the Dean's granddaughter Molly and the bullied Tony. Then a deadly Freshman Trial exposes a traitor at the heart of the Kingdom. As the Mage King closes in on the truth about his family, Caleb has to decide how much of his power to reveal.

Story Guide

Episode 1

In this world, monsters are part of life — predators, with humans as their prey. Then the Mage King Kane rose and led humanity against them, claiming a homeland. He corners the vampire Desmond, who sneers that he only drained a few filthy humans and that humans are food. Kane answers that they are his people, not food — then strikes with thunder.

Dying, Desmond vows to sacrifice his life for a curse: Kane will burn with lust. Blacking out, Kane stumbles into the path of a young woman, Annie, and in the haze of the curse, one reckless night happens. Annie is left reeling — a soldier she had never even met.

Episode 2

Annie tries to leave that night behind, but the village chief Grant won't allow it. He corners her, insisting she come home and marry him. She refuses flatly — she never wanted him, never said yes. His jealousy curdles fast.

When Grant learns she is pregnant, he erupts, calling her a slut who threw herself at another man. Humiliated and enraged, he declares that she and her bastard are banished to live with the livestock on the west side. Meanwhile, word reaches Kane that the vampire prince hit the front line while he was gone, and he rides out to hold it.

Alone in the pen, Annie gives birth — a boy.

Episode 3

The birth sets off something the world has waited for: the legendary child of the elements has arrived. Word goes out that in twelve years the Magic Academy will open admissions early for its most advanced talent test, and Kane vows to find that boy.

Annie names her son Caleb and tells him his father is a soldier, a hero who protects people — and hopes he will be a hero too. But the village turns on the child. After an evil omen appears in the sky, they brand Caleb a jinx who brings disaster. When they come to kill him, Annie shields him: he is her son, and nobody is taking him from her.

Episode 4

Grant comes for the boy, and the sky answers with a bolt that knocks him down. The villagers gasp that Caleb truly is a jinx — even the gods reject him. Annie fires back that the gods are punishing Grant for his own evil, not her son.

Grant's answer is to leave them rotting in the pen, boasting that in twelve years his own son Cody will become a proper mage at the Academy. The village children pick up the cruelty: Cody shoves Caleb into danger, and when Annie protests, he hides behind his father's name — his dad runs the village, and he is going to the Academy.

Episode 5

The village wants Caleb gone, but Annie plants herself in front of the crowd and declares he is neither jinx nor idiot — he will pass the talent test and go to the Academy. They laugh in her face. Only Cody, they insist, has any real chance.

Cody shows off his fire magic, already strong at twelve, and mocks the idea that Caleb could ever do the same. When Caleb quietly insists he can control the lightning in the sky, the whole village howls with laughter. Even Annie gently warns him not to lie — but Caleb means it.

Episode 6

Cody's taunting brings a lightning bolt down right on cue, and the villagers scramble to blame Caleb's bad luck again. When Annie points out that Cody came over to pick on her son and demands an apology, Grant refuses — as chief, he says, his son should feel honored for even noticing Caleb.

That day is the talent test, and Cody struts off to claim his place. But Caleb stops his mother with a quiet request of his own: he wants to try for the Academy too. Annie looks at him — and decides they're going.

Episode 7

Kane looks up and sees the sign he has been chasing: the child of the elements, the prophesied savior, has been born. The memory hits him — the cursed night, the woman who saved him, the child she bore. His own son.

He remembers Desmond's dying curse and realizes he survived not by the gods' favor but because of her. Kane orders every unit out to find the mother and the boy, whatever it takes.

Episode 8

At the Academy's first special admissions test in twelve years, an examiner explains the rules: strike the Testing Stone with your strongest attack. One star means little talent, three earns a place, and nine is the maximum — a mark only the Mage King has ever reached.

Cody steps up and scores four stars — fire talent, the best the village has seen. Grant and the crowd crow that Cody is the only gifted child here. A few more hopefuls are tested, but most barely qualify or fail outright. The examiner moves to wrap things up — but Annie's son has not been tested yet.

Episode 9

Annie steps forward: her son is twelve and meets the requirements. The villagers groan, mocking her for dragging a jinx before the examiner, and Grant sneers that her boy could never match his four-star son. The examiner admits he senses no magic in Caleb at all.

Annie begs for one chance — everyone has the right to be tested. Reluctantly, the examiner agrees. The crowd is already laughing, telling Caleb to go home and feed the animals. Then Caleb strikes the stone, and the impossible happens: nine stars. The examiner is stunned — nine stars, just like the Mage King.
