Derek's brother is Connor Malone — the tycoon who owns half of Pittsburgh. Overnight, he tears away every contract Ridgeline has, and brings Jack to his knees. They stripped him bare. Story Guide

Episode 1

Twelve years after a promise made in Hellman, Jack Holt still remembers what it cost. Sam Russo saw the IED and shoved the squad clear — two seconds later they'd all have been dead. He paid with his leg. Now Sam's family is under siege. At the farmers market, Derek Malone makes clear he decides who stays and who gets thrown out, and the more Maria fights, the more he enjoys it. He taunts her: her husband is dead, so who's coming to save her? Meanwhile Jack waits on Sam — who is never late, and never breaks a promise.

The Veteran’s Promise - Episode 1

Episode 2

The bills keep coming. Insurance refuses to cover Sam's condition, and Maria is eighteen weeks behind with another eighteen looming. Nine-year-old Sophia has been quietly collecting cans and bottles — five cents each, three months straight — to pay for her father's medicine. Maria accuses her of stealing the money, then breaks down apologizing. Sophia comforts her: they'll get the money together, just the two of them. Then Maria steps outside and asks Derek Malone for a few more days on the rent.

The Veteran’s Promise - Episode 2

Episode 3

Maria pleads with Derek: Sam's stand has been closed two weeks, she has no rent. Derek shrugs — rent is rent, everybody has problems. When she says her husband lost his leg serving this country, he sneers that he never made Sam enlist. He'll grant a few days, but only if there's something in it for him. At home, Sam calls Sophia his little bear and shares a secret: on the back of a photo at their stand, he wrote a phone number. If she's ever in real trouble, call it. Whoever answers will help — no matter what.

Episode 4

Sam tells Sophia the man's name is Jack — call him Uncle Jack. Then he sends her to find Maria and ask for an apple, so he can be alone. He whispers an apology to Maria: he married her and never gave her a decent life, and with late-stage cancer he can't keep dragging her and Sophia down. He loves them more than he ever knew how to say. At the stand, Derek corners Maria — one night with him and they're square. Sophia returns to an empty room, asking where her daddy went.

Episode 5

At Sam's funeral, Derek walks in with a smirk: the cripple finally checked out, which makes things easier for Maria. She tells him this is her husband's funeral and asks if he fears God's punishment. Derek answers that Derek Malone fears no one — not God, not man; if God wants him, He can come down and take him. Then Sophia sees what he's done to her father's picture and calls him a bad man. Derek turns on the child.

Episode 6

Derek threatens Sophia for calling him a bad man, and Maria shields her daughter. Neighbors step in — if it's about the rent, they can pool their money; picking on a widow is shameful. Derek's answer: the full rent plus every cent owed is due tomorrow, not a dollar short. His companion suggests Maria could settle it by sleeping with him. The market community hands Maria their pooled cash anyway, and she thanks them. But the harassment isn't over — Derek's next target is her produce crates.

Episode 7

Derek reminds Maria that his family owns the market and what he says goes — paying rent doesn't mean he can't touch her. He tells her the day she wises up and gets in his bed is the day he leaves her alone. Then he turns on her sign: Russo Produce, a dead man's name over the door, bad luck dragging the whole market down. Maria begs to keep her husband's name. Elsewhere, Jack recalls offering Sam a job back in April — Sam turned it down, too proud to ask his brothers for help.

Episode 8

Derek demands to know why Maria never fixed the sign he complained about a month ago. She has no money, and every other sign looks just like hers. He orders her to his office right now — she knows what for. She tells him to forget the sign and get away from her. So he stops pretending: tear it down. Men move on her stall as she protests that it's hers. Then the stand is smashed, and Maria is hit.

Episode 9

Sophia calls the number from the photo, asking a stranger for money to buy her mother a new sign — maybe then the man will stop picking on her. Jack assumes it's a scam, a grown man with a voice changer. But the details don't fit a con: the farmers market, the manager who smashed the stand and hit her mom, the secret number on the back of a photo. Then she says her daddy's name: Sam Russo. Jack's answer is instant — stay right where you are, Uncle Jack is coming.

When a nine-year-old's phone call turns a debt of blood into a rescue mission, you'll want to be there for what Jack does next.
